With the expansion of the NCAA tournament to 68 teams, the First Four round was added to the beloved March Madness format in 2011. The outcome of these first four games determines which four teams advance to the first round of the tournament.

Dayton has hosted the First Four since 2011 and will do so until 2022. It’s the perfect place to start the tournament for several reasons – Dayton loves basketball and the city revolves around celebrating and hosting the First Four. The television advantage of Eastern Standard Time plus a quirky hometown vibe make Dayton a perfect starting point.

The first and second rounds in Hartford are held at the XL Center, a multi-purpose arena that opened in 1975 as home to the University of Connecticut’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and the men’s ice hockey team. Located in the heart of downtown Hartford, the arena and convention center is the largest live entertainment and sports facility in Connecticut. Capacity is more than 15,000 and you’ll find amenities like 42 luxury suites, 10 loge boxes, a lower level fan bar, a Director’s suite, and a club lounge.

The next road to the Final Four stops in Salt Lake City at the Vivint Smart Home Arena. The arena recently underwent a $125 million renovation on all six levels. Surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains and located just west of downtown Salt Lake City, the venue is about 15 minutes from the Salt Lake International Airport. Part of the renovation includes more than 30 restaurants and vendors offering “destination dining” with a lineup of culinary options.

The arena is home to the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame and in addition to hosting the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, they’ve also featured Elton John and the NFL Superbowl Concert Series.
